SEO Is Now 'Search Experience Optimization'

The last few years, search engines such as Google, Bing, and even Apple, have been upgrading their algorithms and machine learning processes to account for the end-user's experience. But, since their algorithms are built upon the work completed by automated crawling bots (pieces of software that manually scour the internet), it has always been difficult for them to truly simulate the actions of a flesh and blood user. And it's not feasible for them to create an algorithm that's based on the anecdotal feedback of an army of individual users that submit their findings.

Instead the search engines have started to write logic that, to their best estimation, is what a user experience should be on a website. Some of the criteria they are now measuring are site speed, mobile optimization, site structure, content, and dozens of other signals that should give the algorithm an idea of whether or not search engine users are getting what they expect from a website.

So, what does this mean for companies, marketers, and website owners when it comes to their SEO?

Basically what I, and dozens of other SEO industry experts, have been writing about for years has now come to fruition. We've exited the era of search engine optimization (SEO), and have now entered the new age of search experience optimization (also... SEO).



And this is great news for anyone that performs digital marketing correctly. It means that "gaming" the system has become less and less viable, and that groups who rely on black hat techniques are seeing their efforts become less effective.

So, how should websites be optimized for the search engines now that user experience plays such a big role?

Ask questions, provide answers.

Previously, marketers used to obsess over ideas like keyword density, meta descriptions, and link profiles. They had everything down to percentages and numbers and it all made sense when it was placed into an excel sheet. But how on earth was a website that was built from data on an excel sheet supposed to appeal to a human being?

That's the problem the search engines set out to fix. And you need to accommodate the changes they've made.

Specifically, you need to think about your website visitors at every stage of your web design and marketing process. And this can be done easily with a series of question and answer audits you can ask yourself as you're creating your marketing campaign.

For instance, if you're designing a web page and you're wondering how to make it appear in the Google search results, you should start by asking what your customers are typing into the search engine. This sounds rudimentary, but think it through for a moment. Previously marketers would optimize for terms such as "snow tires" or "weight loss products". But search habits have become more semantic and people are no longer typing in general terms, but rather they're asking questions.

Thus, the search term "snow tires" has evolved into, "what are the best snow tires for a 2008 Ford F150?"

And it's the companies that are answering the questions for their customers that are starting to win in the search engine rankings. So, stop fretting over how many times you mention the keyword in the content you're writing on the page, and instead start asking yourself what your customers need help with.

Embrace mobile.

If you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, you may be shocked to hear that most people use smart phones and that smart phone searches now account for a more search volume than desktop searches. However, if you've been living in the world with the rest of us, this isn't too surprising. So, if everyone is using mobile devices to browse the web, shouldn't you likewise be optimizing your site for mobile traffic?

Last year, Google made waves in the SEO community by releasing a major algorithm update that specifically improved the search engine visibility of mobile optimized sites over their less optimized competitors. It was lovingly termed " mobilegeddon" by marketers. And while it wasn't the end of the world, it did cause quite a stir with digital marketers.

Across the board, mobilegeddon caused the search results to shuffle about and it didn't just impact small businesses. In fact, over 40% of Fortune 500 websites weren't mobile optimized at the time of the update. Which is staggering when you think that this all just happened less than a year ago. So, some major brands took hits to their online presence.

And what this taught everyone, painfully in some cases, was that we needed to start prioritizing the needs of mobile internet users. You see, mobile users don't have the same bandwidth as desktop users. They have data limits and often the speed of their internet is much lower than a desktop computer. So, if they're trying to interact with a page that has a lot of data and animations to load, it's going to take forever for them to actually see something on their mobile device. Which, as we've been discussing, is not ideal for user experience.

So, instead of building a website that is dramatic from a visual standpoint, but requires the equivalent effort of a million hamsters running on wheels to power up a switchboard to manage all of the data and bytes your site is throwing at the visitor, you should probably go with a more "minimalist" approach.

I recently sat down with Mitul Gandhi, an SEO expert and the co-founder of SEOClarity, a next-generation enterprise-level SEO platform.

"The search engines are no longer kidding around when it comes to mobile optimization," says Mitul. "Google has released AMP Pages, their tool to allow web designers to quickly optimize their pages for mobile devices, and Apple is building their entire algorithm based on the actions of mobile users, based on their massive mobile phone market share."

As Mitul mentioned, Google has recently released a product called AMP pages, which stands for accelerated mobile pages. This product is a great solution for website owners and marketers that don't have web design degrees but understand they need to make significant changes to their website in order to accommodate mobile users.

Pay Attention To Your User Experience Metrics

Once you've optimized your website content and the mobile experience, the next steps are heavily data driven. You should now begin understanding what is happening when visitors are coming to your site and how they are interacting with it. To do this, you can utilize robust tools like the one Mitul's group offers, or for those that don't have the budget, you can analyze your Google Analytics data, which is free to use.



What you'll want to look for are signals that tell you if you're providing a positive user experience past mobile speed and onsite content. To do this, look at metrics like time on site, bounce rate, pages per visit, return visitor rates, and conversions. This data will give you insights as to whether your visitors are enjoying themselves once they are browsing your site. Once you identify problem pages or sections, work on optimizing those through A/B testing.

The reason you want to do this is the search engines are now leveraging the data that is mined from people using their internet browsers. Wait... Google, Bing, and Apple are tracking what you're doing on your browser? Um, yes. Why else would they sink millions of dollars into a piece of software they give away for free. Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge (previously Internet Explorer), and Apple Safari are all spying on you and reporting data points back to their creators.

Now, I can't pretend to know whether they're using this data for nefarious reasons (I can almost bet they are), but we do know that they use this data to understand whether users are having a positive user experience on a website. And the metrics I just told you to measure, are the same ones these browsers are reporting back to the search engines.

Don't Forget Social Media

Finally, you'll want to ensure that you are not just giving lip service to the idea of social media. Regardless of how dry and boring your industry is, you need to be engaging on social media. We have dozens of B2B clients in some pretty dull industries that still actively participate on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

And they're not using us because they think they're going to get a bunch of customers from Facebook. But they understand that the search engines are taking major cues from social media signals as to whether a site offers a positive user experience or not.

After all, if you enjoy something online, what do you usually do? You talk about it. And where do a lot of people talk about things? On social media. So, it's only logical that if you're trying to measure whether a site is providing a great user experience, that there would also be a social footprint signaling this.

So, make sure that you're sending links back to pages on your site when you are posting on social media. And don't just link back to your homepage, but link to product pages, your seo optimisation company information page, and your location pages. These are all places that should be getting signals from the social networks.

And this is also why you should be blogging, as I've talked about ad nauseam in previous articles. Not only do blogs provide great content to your visitors (read: user experience) they also encourage social media sharing and interaction, which leads to social signals, which is what I've been talking about for the last few paragraphs!

So, if you've been wondering how to get your website to rank well in the search engines and have been wondering what the secret sauce is, you can forget about some mystical equation that perfectly balances links, keyword density, and unicorn dust. It doesn't exist. And that's a good thing. Because search experience optimization is a seo search engine optimization much more common sense endeavor and anyone can figure it out with a little bit of time and effort.

Researchers at Cornell University published a study this week that links an increase in deportations to a higher rate of foreclosure within Latino communities. They found that nearly one-third of undocumented Latinos live in homes owned by Latinos residing in the U.S. legally. A sizable share of these undocumented residents are wage earners that contribute to their household's income. "Foreclosure and immigration enforcement affect [Latino] households in significantly negative ways, so there's a question of whether we are derailing our own future her comment is here by handicapping these families," said Matthew Hall, a professor of policy analysis at Cornell University, who helped conduct the research.

Latino households have the highest rate of foreclosure among any ethnic group in the U.S. It has long been believed this was the case because Latinos were one of the primary targets for subprime mortgage loans, the researchers said. But they contend that was only part of the problem.

Post September 11th, immigration enforcement heated up. And from 2005 to 2011, Latinos were hit with a double whammy: As the housing bubble began to pop, the federal government and communities across the U.S. began cracking down on undocumented immigrants.

Many communities started turning to a 1996 law called 287(g), which gave state and local law enforcement officers broad latitude to detain undocumented immigrants and have them deported. Initially implemented in towns and cities along the border, the law was increasingly adopted by law enforcement agencies in the interior of the U.S. as a growing number of immigrants moved to less traditional gateway cities.

In counties that implemented the law and had high detention rates, foreclosures among Latinos spiked, the researchers found.

To prove this trend, the researchers compared foreclosure rates in 40 counties that implemented the law to rates in the 67 counties that had requested to implement the law but were not granted federal approval.

The researchers also compared the foreclosure rates among Latinos with that of Extra resources blacks and whites. They found that foreclosures for blacks and Latinos rose at about the same rate before 287(g) became widely adopted. But after the law was broadly implemented, foreclosures for Latinos grew at a much faster rate.

In 2005, the U.S. foreclosure rate for blacks and Latinos was 2.3%, while it was just 1% for whites, according to Hall. By 2011, the foreclosure rate for Latinos had ballooned to 18%, while the rate among blacks had climbed to 13%. Meanwhile, the foreclosure rate among whites was 7%.

In that same time period, deportations had gone from 186,000 in 2005 to almost two million by 2011. A record three million undocumented immigrants have been deported since 2008 according to the Department of Homeland Security. The vast majority of those immigrants are from Mexico and Central America.

For the most part, the researchers said foreclosure rates are back to pre-recession levels, except in states with a judicial foreclosure backlog like New Jersey, New York and Florida. However, they fear another wave of foreclosures should President Trump stick to his campaign promises.

"If we take Trump at his word we should assume that deportations are most likely going to increase -- and perhaps dramatically so," Hall said. "Deportations not only destroy families -- many of whom are U.S. citizens -- but also harm communities and local economies," he said.

Why does my jaw hurt when I exercise? – The Chart

When I'm exercising, I often get jaw pain. It feels like someone is pressing inward on the joint with their fingers very hard. I've been very careful to maintain a relaxed posture and avoid tensing while I exercise, but the pain still comes. The kind of exercise I'm doing is low impact on the elliptical machine. I've even stopped using the arm holds because I've been worried the back and forth motion was making me tense. I've looked online and found that this could be a sign of heart problems, but I'm only 23 with no family history. Should I be concerned?



Dear Sara:

I am glad you've asked this question, as pains in the chest, left arm and jaw are a very common concern among people beginning an exercise regimen. The bottom line is, anyone who is planning to begin working out should get clearance from a physician before starting. Even children neck pain symptoms getting into a school sport should get medical clearance. Most importantly, those who begin a regimen and have any unexpected pains and discomforts should stop the activity and seek evaluation from a physician. You should not restart the activity until the cause of the pain is determined and measures are planned to prevent it.

Angina, or pain from the heart muscle not getting enough oxygenated blood, can present as mild to severe chest pain, a pain or numbness running up the left arm, pain in the jaw or even as a headache. Angina is typical in patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing strenuous exertion. Strenuous activity increases the heart's need for oxygen. Partial obstruction in the coronary arteries leads to less than adequate flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. The discomfort usually decreases or goes away with rest. If the heart is deprived of blood long enough, some of the heart muscle will die. This is commonly called a myocardial infarction or a heart attack. Death of heart muscle can lead to heart rhythm problems and difficulty in the heart pumping blood. The latter is known as congestive heart failure.

The typical person with cardiovascular disease and angina pain relief gel is in his or her 50s or older. In younger people, discomfort of the chest, the left arm, and the jaw during exercise is more commonly due to non-heart problems. Physicians will assess the young individual with these symptoms for abnormalities of the heart valves and congenital malformations of the heart. These findings are rare. Even rarer is the young person with coronary artery blockages. Young people with coronary artery disease usually have a family and personal history of high serum cholesterol or serum triglyceride or have a history of radiation therapy to chest for another disease such as a cancer.



Patients under evaluation may get electrocardiograms, ultrasound studies of the heart or exercise stress tests. In an exercise stress test, the heart performance is evaluated during exertion with an electrocardiogram, and often with ultrasound and nuclear medicine - use of traceable material injected into the blood vessels to look for blockages.

Among young people, chest discomfort during exercise is commonly due to indigestion, acid reflux, or even muscular and skeletal pain in the rib cage. Pain in the jaw can be due to tensing of the jaw or malocclusion of teeth (a bad bite). Numbness and pain in the forearm are commonly due to carpal tunnel syndrome from gripping exercise machines.

Again I stress that one should not self-diagnose this discomfort. It should be evaluated by a health professional.

'Home Improvement': Where Are They Now?

The youngest star of "Home Improvement," Taran Noah Smith, has left show business, but he's still making headlines.

Smith, who played the youngest of Tim Allen's kids on the '90s sitcom, was arrested Feb. 1 and was later charged with driving under the influence and possession of hashish. Last week, Smith pleaded guilty in California to drug possession and no contest to a "wet reckless" charge (which replaces a DUI in a plea-bargained settlement), according to On The Red Carpet. His sentence included a six-month drug-diversion program, three years probation and a fine.

The actor, 27, has stayed off screen since "Home Improvement" ended in 1999, but he has had his share of real-life drama. He sued his parents in 2001 over the money he made on the sitcom, alleging that they were using his trust fund.

Smith married Heidi Van Pelt, 32, in 2001 and the pair opened a vegan restaurant called PlayFood in California. They had a son, Nolan Eric Smith, before divorcing in 2007.

Children might know him as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story," but many home renovation contractors adults remember Tim Allen as Tim Taylor of "Home Improvement," the host of "Tool Time." Allen, 59, was nominated for a Golden Globe five times for his role in the '90s hit and took home the trophy in 1995.

Since the series ended, Allen has had the busiest career of all his co-stars. He stars as Mike Baxter in ABC's man-of-the-house comedy, "Last Man Standing," which he also executive produces. He has also starred in a host of family-friendly movies, including the "The Santa Clause" trilogy and "Christmas with the Kranks."

Allen married actress Jane Hajduk in 2006 and the pair welcomed a daughter Elizabeth in 2009. Hajduk appeared house remodeling contractor in "The Shaggy Dog" and "Zoom," in which Allen starred. The actor also has a 21-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.



Richard Karn played Al Borland on "Home Improvement," Allen's "Tool Time" co-host and the brunt of most of his jokes. The pair are set to team up again in an upcoming episode of Allen's "Last Man Standing." Karn will guest star on the sitcom as an architect who is shocked when he loses a job to an attractive young girl, who he believes got the job because of her good looks, according to TVLine.com. The episode is set to air early next year.

Since "Home Improvement" wrapped, Karn, 56, has starred in the children's comedies "MVP 2: Most Vertical Primate" and "Air Buddies." He hosted "Family Feud" from 2002 to 2006 and "Bingo America" in 2008. Karn is married to Tudi Roche, who made appearances on "Home Improvement" as Jill Taylor's sister. They have a son named Cooper.

Patricia Richardson scored two Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations for her role as Jill Taylor in "Home Improvement," but she never snagged a trophy. Since the show wrapped in 1999, Richardson has appeared in several made-for-TV movies and starred home renovation before and after in Lifetime's series "Strong Medicine."

Earlier this fall, Richardson, 61, starred in Alfred Uhry's play "Apples and Oranges" in Atlanta. She recently wrapped the feature film "Avarice" which has yet to set a release date.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas was a heartthrob for thousands of teens during his years as Randy Taylor on "Home Improvement." But since leaving the show in 1998, Thomas, 31, has stayed relatively out of the spotlight. He attended Harvard University from 2000 to 2002 and graduated from Columbia University in 2010. He has had guest-starring roles on "Veronica Mars," "8 Simple Rules" and "Smallville," but he hasn't had any major roles since 2005.

He came out of the shadows in 2011 for a "Home Improvement" reunion organized by Entertainment Weekly. The reunion marked the first time the entire cast had seen Thomas since 1998.

The actor told the magazine that directing could be in his future.

"I think at this point, I'd eventually like to work behind the camera," Thomas said. "That's not to say I would never act again. I'm not quite sure to be honest. I still have a passion for TV and film and could see myself working in it."

Zachery Ty Bryan played Thomas' older brother Brad on "Home Improvement" and like his TV-show brother, Bryan has stayed largely out of show biz. One of the first things he did after the sitcom ended was drop the Ty from his name. Since then, he has had numerous guest-starring roles on shows like "Burn Notice" and "Cold Case," but his real career is behind the camera.

In 2009, Bryan, 31, and his pal Adam Targum founded the production company Vision Entertainment Group Inc. The company is wrapping production on the horror film "Rogue River." Bryan credits "Home Improvement" for the success he has had in the film industry.

"'Home Improvement' was the key in the ignition that started the engine," Bryan told CNN earlier this year. "It not only was financially great for me and my family, but it was such a learning experience. ... I can sit in a meeting with someone twice my age and have close to the same experience. I've always looked at 'Home Improvement' and my early-age success as an opportunity to learn and be able to eventually put on this cap that I'm wearing now."



Bryan said he's not ruling out acting for the future but it's not his focus right now.
