The story of my wife: Artist Maureen Radcliffe George

This article is a first because I have never told the story about my artist wife, Maureen Radcliffe George. I have mentioned and described her work. as she participates in various exhibits as a printmaker at the Lee Arts Center in Arlington, Virginia. Yet, I have not provided a diligent description about her as my lifelong companion and love of my life. (It is our anniversary next week, the day before Valentine's.)

This coming Friday, February 8, 2013, her work will be exhibited at an opening at the Waverly Street Gallery in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Love of my life

When we were in high school we had jobs working at my cousins restaurant. She was a waitress and I was the grill chef. There are many details about our meeting, but that wont fit here, so I will leave you in suspense. Instead, I will share with you the painting that changed my life, a watercolor that Rhino Shield cost she gave to me for my birthday in 1967. She was a high school student with a watercolor mentor as they did not teach art at her school. That painting hung by my side ever since.

It is light and free, yet demonstrates much discipline for the medium and associated skill. That portends the artist that she would become by studying at The Ohio State University where she learned printmaking from Sidney Chafetz.

As a painter, she mastered oil and acrylic, inspired by abstract expressionists and by her Aunt Jean McKinley Pack, a well-known interior designer from Chicago's north side who also painted.

Maureen is exceptionally able, demonstrated by her mastery of art media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, and ceramics too. Today, she is more at printmaking, however, prints often begin with a painting.

We initially lived in our native Ohio in several cities while she gave fulltime attention to our daughter, Mary. She and Mary would paint and produce art together continuously. We moved to Chicago and their painting together continued with interaction with Aunt Jeanne.

We moved to Tampa, Florida, and Maureen engaged the landscape as we lived on Tampa Bay. She undertook painting scenes of the water and our subtropical living. She became a designer for a Fortune 500 company and mixed design and advertising work with fine art.

We moved again to Hermosa Beach, California. While moving is disruptive it is also stimulating. Living on the beach in Los Angeles was a dream that she enjoyed with a studio from which she could see Palos Verdes to the south and Malibu to the north.

Maureen loves music and especially operas. The opera obsession Cost of Rhino Shield began when we lived in California where she also did design work for people like the Morgan Wixson Theater in Santa Monica. She supported the Terpsicorps Dance Company and designed their logo and promotional materials.

The interaction with theater mixed with opera from which a series of paintings and prints would emerge over time.

Eventually, we would move northward to Alameda, living on the San Francisco Bay. She became active in Alameda Women Artists and designed their logo. She painted with intensity from our studio in an old Victorian house overlooking the estuary. Opera music played and she painted with high ceilings. She participated in open studios as she loaded the 14 foot walls with opera paintings shown in the salon style.

One day in February near Valentines, we opened the Oakland Tribune and there, as part of the masthead, was Maureens painting of Carmen in full color. That painting is now hung by a collector in Palm Springs California as her work is owned by many persons across the nation.

In every location, Maureen has become a part of the local art community and champions women artists.

Now, at the Waverly Gallery, you will see three prints. The toreador Monotype with Chine Coll print Torador L'amour T'attend! Et Songe Bien, and the Carmen image is Torador L'amour T'attend! The third monotype with Chine Coll is Quando Men Vo, based on an Aria from La Boheme.

Two prints are truly a pair. If you look at them hanging together, one is glancing at the other with admiration and love.

Other opera paintings are shown in the slideshow.

In many instances, she often takes design elements from the paintings to produce prints and sometimes jewelry items. She incorporates details from these paintings to produce additional art as they are so rich in visual elements.

Technical achievements include large complex prints and exquisite details that might even include tatting.

Meg Ryan gets Internet buzz after People magazine story about her faded career

Was actress Meg Ryan's career ruined by Hollywood's prejudice against women of a certain age or was it ruined by her bad choices in movies and alleged plastic surgery? A lot of people on the Internet have been talking about Ryan, ever since People magazine revealed that she is the subject of a cover story about why Ryan (who is 51) has faded from the public spotlight. The People magazine issue went on sale on Oct. 4, 2013. After People put the story about Ryan on its website, it became the most-read story on People's website. Ryan's name also became a Top 10 trending topic on Yahoo.

The People magazine story is fairly kind to Ryan. The article claims that she deliberately backed away from Hollywood to spend a quiet life in New York City with her singer/musician boyfriend John Mellencamp, 61, whom she's been dating since 2010. (Mellencamp was reportedly separated from his third wife, Elaine, when he and Ryan began dating. John and Elaine Mellencamp got divorced in 2011.) Ryan has also been raising her 8-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom she adopted as a baby from China. Ryan has a 20-year-old son named Jack from her marriage to ex-husband Dennis Quaid, whom Ryan co-starred with in a few movies. Jack is also an actor.

However, based on most of the Internet comments that have been made in reaction to the People magazine story about Ryan, most people don't believe that Ryan chose to walk away from Hollywood and semi-retire as an actress. Many people believe that Hollywood lost interest in her after she had a string of flop movies. Many commentators say that Ryan's drastically changed face (which many people believe is the result of bad plastic surgery) is a big reason why her popularity has faded and why she isn't working as much as an actress.

Ryan's career may have also been torpedoed by her reputation for being a difficult and demanding diva behind the scenes. According to the New York Daily News: "After her boxing film, 'Against the Ropes,' hit the mat, she's said to have asked her William Morris agents to cut their usual 10 percent commission. According to a source familiar with the talks, she wanted them to make nothing off her first $2 million in salary and just 5 percent on her wages above that. Agency head Jim Wiatt 'didn't want to lose a big star, so he gave in to her,' says the source."

Those kinds of demands only work over time if the star continues to have big hits. And as far as "age discrimination" as the main reason for the decline in Ryan's career, that's arguable, since there are some actresses in Ryan's age group (such as Sandra Bullock, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston) who continue to headline movies and have relatively successful careers. Many other famous actresses in the same age group have had great success in television or continue to act in movies in prominent supporting roles.

People are also saying that Ryan's career began to go downhill when her extramarital affair with her "Proof of Life" co-star Russell Crowe was made public. Ryan and Crowe reportedly began their affair when they were working together on the movie, which bombed when it was released in 2000. Ryan and Quaid divorced in 2001. Quaid has publicly admitted to having problems with substance abuse, including a cocaine addiction that he says is in his past.

Crowe reportedly dumped Ryan because she wanted a more serious relationship with him than he was willing to give to her. There were also rumors that Crowe broke up with Ryan because he thought the bad publicity about the affair might ruin his career. He went on to win an Oscar (for the 2000 movie "Gladiator"), while Ryan's career went on a downward spiral.

In 2008, Ryan commented to Hello! magazine about her affair with Crowe: "Russell wasn't a homewrecker. He didn't talk and I'll always be grateful to him for that. But I did not leave my marriage for him. I left because it was not working." Ryan also told other media outlets over the years that her marriage to Quaid was in major trouble by the time she got involved with Crowe. In 2008, when Ryan was promoting her flop remake of "The Women," she said in interviews that Quaid was also an unfaithful spouse during their marriage. She told InStyle magazine: "Dennis westlake plastic surgery yelp was not faithful to me for a long time, and that was very painful."

Quaid responded by issuing this public statement in 2008: "It was eight years ago, and I find it unbelievable that Meg continues publicly to rehash and rewrite the story of our relationship. Also, I find it regrettable that our son, Jack, has to be reminded in a public way of the turmoil and pain that every child feels in a divorce. I, myself, moved on years ago and am fortunate to have a happy, beautiful family."

Quaid married his third wife, Kimberly Buffington, in 2004. Their twins Thomas and Zoe were born in 2007 and were infamously given an accidental overdose of heparin in a hospital, days after they were born. The twins recovered, but Quaid publicly waged a campaign for hospital reform. In 2012, Quaid and Buffington filed for divorce, reconciled, and filed for divorce again.

It is unclear why People magazine chose this particular week to put Ryan on the cover. Ryan was not interviewed for the article, which instead features interviews with some of her close friends and associates.

In Ryan's case, none of the above applies.

Her most recent movie was 2009's "Serious Moonlight," a dark comedy which flopped. She returned to acting in 2012 with a guest appearance on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm," whose co-star Cheryl Hines directed "Serious Moonlight." In 2013, Ryan made guest appearances on Showtime's "Web Therapy," starring Lisa Kudrow.

Despite People magazine's claim that Ryan chose to leave the public spotlight, Ryan is no Brigitte Bardot, the French actress/sex symbol who became notoriously reclusive in her later years. In June 2013, Ryan accepted the Tao Arte award at the Taormina Filmfest in Taormina, Italy. And in April 2013, she walked the red carpet at the opening of the Broadway play "Lucky Guy," which starred her former co-star Tom Hanks. "Lucky Guy" was written by the late Nora Ephron, who also wrote and directed 1988's "Sleepless in Seattle" and 1998's "You've Got Mail," two movies that starred Hanks and Ryan. Ephron also wrote 1989's "When Harry Met Sally," which starred Ryan and Billy Crystal, and is still considered one of Ryan's best movies.

Many observers believe that the People magazine story is part of a plan for Ryan to make a comeback. Time will tell if all this recent publicity will work in reviving Ryan's career.

"She cheated and was honest about it and continued to see russell for a while. As far as her husband cheating on her is something i dont know. I know all the Meg Ryan people will stick up for her and say he did but i never read or heard any proof of it."

"Probably after the Russell Crowe incident she's probably a little embarrassed to be in the limelight any longer not to mention killing her marriage a la Tiger Woods in the process. Oh well, selling apples on street corners isn't so bad."

"I didn't know she was dating John Mellencamp. I'll always love her performances in 'When Harry Met Sally' and 'Sleepless in Seattle.' I really liked her in 'The Women,' as well. I think of her similar to the way I think of Julia Roberts. A couple of GREAT movies that I'm grateful for. And that's about it. Who knows, both could make a comeback in more mature roles as long as they don't plastic surgery themselves up dr goldman westlake too much. (Of course, that ship may have already sailed.)"

"I assumed she stopped making films because she became too old in the eyes of movie producers, and that the sickening plastic surgery she had has rendered her looking somewhat ridiculous."

Oct. 11, 2013 update: It seems as if Ryan really wants to be in the spotlight after all. She has signed on to executive produce and star in a TV pilot (title to be announced) for NBC.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: "In the half-hour single-camera comedy from writer and former 'Family Ties' Emmy nominee Marc Lawrence, Ryan will play a sunny, devoted and desperately non-confrontational single mom who decides to return to her New York publishing house where she was once a brilliant editor to find that she now works for Brenda, a neurotic 30-year-old who was once her former intern. Now she must find a way to keep her boss, her teenage kids, her almost ex-husband and her meddlesome mother-in-law all happy, which results in her over-complicating every situation and somehow always making it worse. Ryan will executive produce the project with manager Jane Berliner for Universal Television and Lawrence's Reserve Room Productions."

Ryan's previous efforts in starring in TV were short-lived failures. Her 1982 sitcom "One of the Boys" (on NBC) was quickly cancelled, as was her 1985 Western TV show "Wildside," which lasted just one month on ABC.

Welcome! If you're looking for information on a US work visa or how to obtain one, you've come to the right place. While I'm not an immigration attorney, I have a lot of experience with visas. Also be sure to check out the comments for more valuable insight from others.

All around the world, people dream of having the opportunity to come to the United States. Many know that the jobs available in the US pay better and have better conditions than anything available to them at home. Since so many people are interested in visiting the United States, the rules have been getting more and more strict as to who can come in and why.

The Guest Worker Program

Because of the lack of available U.S. workers, the U.S. government has established the Guest Worker program. This program provides qualified individuals with work visas, allowing them the ability to live and work in the United States anywhere from three months to three years (and beyond, under certain conditions).

Non-Immigrant Visas

There are many different types of visas reserved for various jobs, lengths of stay, and countries of origin. The U.S. has over sixty types of non-immigrant visas alone. Maneuvering around and applying for these visas can be difficult, if not impossible for a single individual. More often than not, workers interested in acquiring a work visa have to apply for work with an international recruiter. Recruiters are usually able to offer them a position in a U.S. business, and can provide aid and advice in choosing a status and location.

Non-immigrant visas typically have a limit placed upon them as to how many applicants can receive the status. With H-2B and H-1B visas, the cap is 66,000 individuals per year. The cap is divided into two periods of 33,000 applicants per period.

It is notoriously difficult to get these types of visas, unless the applicant is able to apply as soon as the opportunity to do so arises. Applicants that wait to 30 days prior to the opening of the cap often miss out on the chance to be approved to hire nonimmigrant workers.

Available Types of Visas

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) typically grants two types of visas:

Immigrant. These are permanent. Get an immigrant visa, and you're able to stay for good.Non-immigrant. This second type of visa is temporaryeither on a temporary, seasonal, annual, or three-year basis.

All Family and Employment-Based (EB) visas are immigrant visas while most business visas and other non-employment (non-EB) visas are considered non-immigrant visas. Every type of visa is assigned a letter (designating the type of visa) and a number (designating the subclass).


Employment Immigrant Visas

EB-1. Reserved for Priority Workers. For foreign nationals of extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business or athletics.EB-2. Reserved for professionals with advanced degrees or persons with exceptional ability in the sciences, arts or business.EB-3. Reserved for "Skilled" or "Professional Workers," defined as: foreign national professionals with bachelor's degrees not qualifying for a higher preference category; skilled workers with two years training; and experience and unskilled workers. In almost all cases, a job offer and labour certification are required. More recently the introduction of Programmed Electronic Review Management (PERM) is making the application process more complicated but is cutting waiting times significantly.EB-4. Special Immigrants. Reserved for religious workers, employees and former employees of the US government abroad.Business

Business visas are all about how much money you are willing to invest in the United States. In some cases, $100,000 or less could give you the chance to become a resident of the United States via an E-1 or E-2 visa.

Immigrant Business Visas

EB-5. Immigrant Investor visa. Reserved for those who set-up a business in the States with a minimum investment figure of at least $500,000. The business must create or stimulate the employment of US nationals in an area designated as a Regional Center, or one million elsewhere. The EB-5 is the only business visa that provides immediate permanent residency to the applicant, his or her spouse and any children under 21. Often the EB-5 designation is presented as a 'retirement' visa, but it is, in fact, a 'passive' investment visa (meaning you do not have to actively participate in the business).

Non-immigrant Business Visas

E Treaty Traders and Investors. A Treaty Trader is an individual from a country with which the US has a trade treaty.E-1. Treaty Trader. Reserved for those carrying out a trade of an international nature. Typically granted to those doing business on.

their own behalf, but also allowed for individuals doing business as the employee of a foreign business.E-2. Treaty Investor. The E-2 is for those who invest a 'substantial' amount of capital in a preconstruction analysis US enterprise that they are seeking to develop. This designation is often popular with business-oriented individuals from the British Isles. Renewals, which are typically granted for three years, can be gained should the business continue to meet the requirements. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age can accompany the primary beneficiaries.B-1. Temporary Business Visitor. This designation permits temporary residence in the US for a specific, limited period. During this period, beneficiaries cannot normally take 'gainful employment', receive a salary from a US source or participate as a professional in entertainment or sporting events (where there is a cash prize or other economic incentive). B-1 visas are often granted to those travelling to the United States for a period between 2 weeks to 6 months, for the purposes of signing trade agreements or attending conventions related to their primary business.Miscellaneous Status

Holiday Visa

B-2. Reserved for those who don't qualify for any of the above. The B-2 designation is often referred to as the "Holiday Visa." It permits a stay of up to six months in the US. An interview with a consular officer is required to obtain a B-2 visa, and it is unlawful to engage in any work in the United States while under this status. As of late, residents of certain countries have been receiving authorizations for up to 5-10 years. However, they are only permitted to remain in the United States for up to six months (unless they specifically petition otherwise).

Student Visa

F-1. Student visa. Reserved for individuals between the ages of 18 and 55. Permits a stay of up to seven years, provided the beneficiary remains enrolled in a U.S. college or University throughout the duration of his/her stay.J-1 Exchange program visa. This designation is popular with students from countries around the world. Typically reserved for the "summer season" (for Northern Hemisphere countries) and "winter season" (Southern Hemisphere countries).

Family Visa

US citizens can sponsor relatives to gain permanent residency in America, but they have to be defined as "immediate family." If you are eligible, however, don't expect to be able to leave in a hurry. This process can take a number of years, and is usually quite cumbersome. There are four types of Family visas, all subject to annual quotas.

F-1. Reserved for Unmarried sons and daughters of US citizens who are over 21 years of age. Also allocated towards Exchange Students studying in U.S. universities. The processing period is one to five years.F-2A. Reserved for Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of a US permanent resident. The processing period is one to five years.F-2B. Reserved for Unmarried sons and daughters over 21 of a US permanent resident. The processing period is one to seven years.F-3. Reserved for Married sons and daughter of US citizens. The processing period is typically one to five years.F-4 Reserved for Biological siblings of US citizens. Processing period tends to be five to seven years.

Non-immigrant Visas

H-1B. Speciality Worker. Reserved for professions in which specific labour shortages are experienced in specialised industries. Qualifications construction services description for the via include college education and extraordinary ability.H-2A. Reserved for temporary and seasonal agriculture workers. This program supplements the needs of farms, greenhouses, and other agriculturally-oriented businesses throughout the United States. There is no cap on this visa status, but the requirements placed upon the employers are very strict.H-2B. Reserved for temporary and seasonal unskilled NonImmigrant workers. This visa is typically sought by employers and workers in the Hospitality, Tourism, Construction, Landscaping, and other unskilled industries.Other H-class visas. Reserved for nurses working in health professional shortage areas, trainees in various industries, truck drivers, and other such professions.Intracompany Transfers. Employees of foreign companies with parent companies, branches or subsidiaries in the US are able to work in the United States under the L Intracompany Transferee visa designation.L-1A. Reserved for executive or managerial roles. Also used by UK business owners to transfer to a US branch of their company.L-1B. This status covers specialised skills and knowledge.L-2. Reserved for the spouses and children of recipients of L-1A and L-1B visas (spouses are able to work on the L-2 visa).Recommended Work Visa: the H-2B

The H2B work visa is a status that is designated for individuals:

Who will be employed in non-agricultural positions that are either seasonal, intermittent or that can be labelled a one time occurrence.Qualifying positions include those in retail and restaurant builders the: hospitality, restaurant, tourism, landscaping, construction, and other unskilled worker categories.

Spouses and children of H2B visa holders may enter and remain in the US in H4 status. H4 visa holders may attend school in the US but are not legally allowed to be employed.

For whom is the H2B work visa appropriate?

US. companies hiring foreign nationals to perform temporary work for which there are no US workers are available.

What are the requirements for obtaining an H2B Work Visa?

A worker that qualifies for the H-2B Worker program if they are a temporary/seasonal worker coming temporarily to the United States to perform temporary/seasonal services or labor. This worker must not displace U.S. workers capable of performing the job, and whose employment is not adversely affecting the wage and working conditions of U.S. workers.In all cases, even though the H-2B work visa can be issued for up to one year, it is assumed that the temporary need has a "clear beginning" and a "clear end" which will self-destruct in a year or less by a pre-arranged date when each non-immigrant worker must promptly return to a foreign shore. The temporary nature of needs lasting longer than 10 months are suspect and need to be adequately justified. H-2B workers do not qualify for temporary work unless the underlying job itself is temporary.

Remaining in the U.S. on an H-2B

Many H-2B workers, upon entering the country, are able to find employment throughout various employment seasons.

For example, employers that typically need workers during the summer seasons do not have as many jobs open during winter months, and thus are not able to make full use of H-2B workers.Workers may then find another employer needing workers for winter and spring months, and continue their stay in the U.S. without being required to return to their home country.The cycle of continuously finding seasonal work can continue for up to three years, after which the non-immigrant worker must pursue a different status or return to their home.
